A Day Trip to Savannah: Neon Signs, Pralines, and a Rainy Evening
Our first weekend, we decided to take a short drive over to Savannah. It’s one of those places that always seems to have something going on, and it didn’t take long before we were reminded why we wanted to visit.
Exploring Savannah
As soon as we got into town, I spotted something that immediately caught my attention—a classic neon sign for the Thunderbird Inn.
If you’ve followed our travels, you know I can’t pass up a good neon sign. This one didn’t disappoint. The motel looked beautifully maintained—definitely one of those restored roadside spots that still holds onto its vintage charm.
From there, we made our way into downtown Savannah. One of the things that stands out right away is the layout. The city is filled with these little squares scattered throughout, each one with its own feel.
We found parking near Ellis Square and started walking.
City Market Stops
We headed over to City Market, which quickly became the center of our afternoon.
For lunch, we decided on Vinnie Van GoGo’s. While we waited for a table, Pat and I stepped next door into Savannah’s Candy Kitchen.
We picked up a couple of pralines—and yeah, they were just as good as you’d expect.
Once we got seated, the pizza at Vinnie Van GoGo’s was excellent. The only downside? Pizza on a hot, humid Savannah day is a bit intense—but still worth it.
A Few More Stops
After lunch, I needed some water, so we stopped into Byrd Cookie Company.
We had been to their Pigeon Forge location before, but this time I went with a freshly baked dessert along with a bottle of water—exactly what I needed.
We spent some time wandering through the shops, including Trolley Stop Gifts where we picked up a margarita glass ornament.
We also stopped by the Art Center at City Market, which is always worth a look. It’s filled with work from local artists, and it’s one of those places you can take your time browsing.
Music, Drinks, and a Change in Weather
Before heading out, we made one more stop at B&D Burgers.
We grabbed a drink and sat outside for a bit, listening to a couple of musicians playing in the courtyard. It was a nice way to slow things down after walking around all afternoon.
Not long after, the skies started to turn, and it looked like rain was moving in.
Heading Back
With the weather rolling in, we decided it was a good time to head back to Margaritaville Hotel Savannah for the night.
Wrap-Up
It was a simple afternoon, but one of those that just worked. A little walking, some good food, a few fun finds, and a bit of live music before the rain set in.
Savannah has a way of making even a short visit feel full.
