2015 Route 66 RV Trip Overview | September 12–20 Road Trip Adventure

2015 Route 66 RV Trip

By September 2015, we were starting to feel comfortable traveling Route 66 with our RV, but we were still learning something new on every trip. Traveling the Mother Road in an RV is a very different experience than traveling by car and staying in motels. The pace is different, the planning is different, and the experience of the towns and the road itself feels different when you’re bringing your home along with you.

This trip would take us west on Route 66 through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, before turning around and heading back east toward home. We planned the trip around RV parks along or near Route 66, which ended up being one of the most interesting parts of the trip. We discovered that there are quite a few RV parks located directly on old Route 66 or very close to it, and many of them really embrace Route 66 travelers.

One of the things we enjoyed most about traveling Route 66 this way was that every day felt like we were moving to a new small town, but we still had our own bed, our own kitchen, and our own space each night. Instead of packing and unpacking at motels every day, we would set up at an RV park, relax for the evening, and then head out the next morning to explore more of the road.

Traveling with the RV also changed how we planned our days. We had to be more mindful of where we could park, where we could turn around, and which alignments of Route 66 were practical with a trailer. Some of the older alignments with narrow roads or rough pavement weren’t ideal for towing, but we still managed to see many classic stops along the way.

This trip included a lot of classic Route 66 locations, roadside attractions, small towns, and a few places we had visited before but wanted to see again. That’s one of the great things about Route 66 — even when you revisit the same towns, there is always something new to notice, a different place to stop, or a new person to meet.

We also began to notice more and more other Route 66 travelers along the way, including several RV travelers who were clearly making the same kind of journey we were. Seeing Route 66 license plates, window decals, and people sitting outside their campers in the evening made it feel like we were part of a small traveling community moving along the same historic road.

By the end of this trip, we were completely convinced that Route 66 and RV travel go together very well. There are plenty of places to stay, plenty of things to see, and traveling this way gives you a chance to experience the road at a slower pace — which is really the way Route 66 is meant to be experienced.

This September 2015 trip became another chapter in our ongoing Route 66 travels, and like every trip on the Mother Road, it left us looking forward to the next time we could get back out there and follow the road again.
