Black Tulips & Unexpected Stops in Vevay, Indiana
I’d never heard of Kat Von D until about a year ago. A few people I know mentioned she had bought an old mansion and moved down here to Vevay from Los Angeles, and that alone was enough to make me curious.
So I looked her up.
Turns out she’s a pretty big deal in the tattoo world—something like 11 million followers big.
We made our way into town this afternoon after leaving the campground, and I decided to swing by the place everyone had been talking about—the black tulip gardens she planted right next to her property.
This year alone, they put in around 15,000 tulips.
It’s one of those spots you don’t really expect to see out here. You turn down a quiet neighborhood street, and suddenly there are rows of deep, dark tulips stretching out beside this old mansion.
Cars pulling over wherever they can. Folks hopping out, walking around for a few minutes, snapping photos, and heading back out. It honestly gave me a bit of that Cadillac Ranch vibe—just a steady flow of travelers stopping in, taking it in, and moving on.
From there, we made our way along the river, and it got me thinking—this stretch of southern Indiana seems to attract more than its fair share of interesting folks.
Just about 20 minutes down the Ohio River in Madison, John Schneider—Bo Duke himself from The Dukes of Hazzard—has been living right on the main drag for the past couple of years.
Not exactly something you expect when you’re cruising through small river towns.
Wrap-Up
It’s funny how a simple afternoon drive can turn into something unexpected.
One minute you’re leaving a campground, and the next you’re standing in the middle of a neighborhood looking at 15,000 black tulips, thinking about roadside attractions and celebrities tucked into small-town corners.
That’s the kind of stuff that makes these trips memorable.
Hope you enjoyed the ride!
