Finding Our Own Margaritaville: A Road Trip Story That Changed Us
There are some trips you take…
…and then there are the ones that stay with you long after you’ve unpacked the car.
The kind you don’t fully understand while you’re in them.
The kind that, over time, quietly become part of who you are.
This is one of those stories.
It didn’t happen all at once. There wasn’t a single moment where everything changed. Instead, it unfolded slowly—over a few years, a few visits, and a whole lot of time spent with good friends in a place we didn’t quite understand at first.
But somewhere along the way…
we found our own Margaritaville.
It Started with Friends
This journey really begins with our camping friends, Alan and Carie.
After years of camping trips, road trips, and time spent together around campfires, they made a big move—down to Latitude Margaritaville in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
We were excited for them.
But if we’re being honest… we didn’t fully get it yet.
Margaritaville? Like the song?
It sounded fun, sure—but it also felt like something different from the roadside Americana and Route 66 adventures we were used to.
Still, when your friends move somewhere new, you go visit.
And that’s exactly what we did.
First Impressions — October 2023
Our first visit was in October 2023.
It didn’t take long to realize this wasn’t just a neighborhood—it was a lifestyle.
Colorful homes, golf carts everywhere, music playing, people relaxing by the pool… it felt like stepping into a vacation that never really ended.
We spent time catching up with Alan and Carie, meeting some of their friends, and getting a feel for what life looked like there.
At that point, we were observers.
Curious.
Enjoying it—still trying to figure it out – but still on the outside looking in.
Coming Back — April 2025
When we came back in April of 2025, something felt different.
Not dramatically.
Not all at once.
Just… a little more familiar.
We knew where things were. We recognized faces. We settled into the rhythm a bit easier.
Meals at Bar & Chill lasted a little longer than planned.
Game nights brought laughter that felt less like visiting… and more like belonging.
And somewhere along the way, almost without noticing, the music started to sink in a little deeper.
Jimmy Buffett wasn’t just something playing in the background anymore.
It started to feel like part of the soundtrack to the experience.
Living It — June to July 2025
Then came the trip that changed everything.
From June 14 to July 12, 2025, we didn’t just visit—we lived there.
We rented the home right next door to Alan and Carie.
For a full month, this wasn’t a getaway.
It was daily life.
Morning routines. Working remotely. Evenings with friends. Game nights. Pool days. Conversations that stretched late into the night.
We explored the community more deeply—checking out model homes, enjoying the amenities, and settling into a rhythm that felt… surprisingly natural.
Outside of Margaritaville, we took time to explore the area too—Savannah, Beaufort, Bluffton, Charleston, and the surrounding Lowcountry.
But no matter where we went, we always found ourselves looking forward to coming back..
And by the end of that month, something had changed.
We weren’t just visiting anymore.
We felt like we belonged.
More Than a Place
What surprised us most wasn’t the amenities or even the location.
It was the sense of community.
Alan and Carie had built a life here surrounded by friends, laughter, and shared experiences—and they welcomed us right into it.
Game nights turned into traditions.
Casual conversations turned into friendships.
And what started as “visiting friends” turned into something much bigger.
The Music Found Us
Somewhere along the way—especially after that April trip and into the summer—we found ourselves listening to more and more Jimmy Buffett.
At first, it was just part of the atmosphere.
Then it became something we sought out.
By the time September rolled around, we weren’t just listening…
we were going to shows.
A Labor Day weekend in Louisville filled with Trop Rock artists.
The Coral Reefer Band live in Cincinnati.
A Jimmy Buffett tribute band in Louisville.
And later, seeing Mac McAnally at the Palace Theatre.
Somewhere along the way, we crossed that line—from casual listeners to something more. What started as background music had become something we connected with.
Looking Back
If you had told us a few years ago that we’d be spending weeks at a time in Margaritaville, going to concerts, and fully embracing the Parrothead lifestyle…
we probably would have laughed.
But that’s the thing about road trips—and life in general.
Sometimes the best experiences are the ones you never planned for.
The ones that grow slowly.
The ones shaped by people, places, and moments you didn’t expect.
Finding Our Own Margaritaville
For us, Margaritaville isn’t just a place on a map.
It’s not just a neighborhood.
And it’s not just music.
It’s a feeling we didn’t know we were looking for.
Time spent with friends.
Slowing down just enough to enjoy where you are.
Letting things unfold instead of rushing ahead.
And somewhere between that first visit in 2023 and a month-long stay in 2025…
we realized something.
We didn’t just visit Margaritaville.
We created our own version of it.
