Route 66 with Our Grandson – Amarillo, Texas to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: September 17, 2015
We left the Oasis RV Park in Amarillo this morning to begin the return leg of our journey home.
As we were packing up, Jameson wanted to spend a little more time enjoying the playground at the campground. While he played, the truck doors had been left open while we loaded gear. Unfortunately, that turned out to be an invitation for a swarm of Texas flies to move into the cab.
When Jameson climbed back into the truck, he was immediately surrounded by buzzing intruders and quickly became very upset, loudly declaring:
“I hate Texas flies!”
We opened the windows and spent a few minutes shooing them out until the last one finally escaped. Once the cab was clear and calm restored, Jameson was happy again—and we were ready to hit the road.
A Quick Stop in Shamrock
Before leaving the Texas Panhandle behind, we made another short stop at the beautifully restored U-Drop Inn in Shamrock. This iconic Route 66 landmark—originally a 1930s Conoco station and café—remains one of the most recognizable buildings along the Mother Road. It was a quick visit, but always worth stopping to admire.
Destination: Oklahoma City
Our destination for the night was Twin Fountains RV Resort in Oklahoma City. The resort is located just southeast of downtown near I-44 and I-35, not far from Remington Park.
This is the kind of RV park that can really spoil you.
Much like the Oasis RV Park in Amarillo, Twin Fountains caters to many travelers with large, high-end rigs and long stays. The park was beautifully maintained with manicured grounds and excellent facilities.
Among the highlights:
- A large lodge with 24-hour laundry
- Swimming pool and hot tub
- Miniature golf
- A spacious indoor playroom filled with toys
- Even optional extras like massage services
Jameson absolutely loved the playroom and could have stayed there for hours. We also played a round of mini golf before settling in for the evening.
Dinner at a Local Favorite
For dinner we headed to a regional favorite: Braum’s.
Braum’s is well known across Oklahoma and the surrounding states for its burgers, dairy products, and of course excellent ice cream. It made the perfect casual stop after a long travel day.
Twin Fountains was such a great place to stay that we were honestly disappointed we were only there for one night. It’s definitely the type of campground you could happily spend several days enjoying.
Tomorrow we would continue the journey east on Route 66 toward home.
